A Doggy Birthday Party, Celebrities, and the CLEAR Foundation Fight Cancer with a Fundraiser

We recently celebrated a major milestone in our dog Cardiff reaching nine years of age. To most owners, a small dog like a Welsh Terrier (Cardiff’s breed) doesn’t sound like an extraordinarily long life.

Yet, the tale of Cardiff’s age milestone is one of overcoming typically fatal illness on four occasions during his nine years of life. As a younger pooch, he’s survived three episodes of typically fatal immune mediated hemolytic anemia [4] (IMHA). More recently, Cardiff developed T-cell lymphoma on a loop of small intestine requiring surgical removal and six months of chemotherapy (University of Wisconsin Canine Lymphoma Protoco [5]l or CHOP).

The chronicles of Cardiff’s battles through illness can be found at the end of this post.

In commemoration of Cardiff completing his chemotherapy course and achieving the birthday milestone, we recently had a party for him at the Pussy & Pooch pet lifestyle center [6] in Beverly Hills, CA.  We’ve previously never hosted such an event for Cardiff’s birthday, so I wanted to make this one special and raise awareness of canine cancer to help other owners going through similar health crises with their pets.

Cardiff’s story is being featured in a upcoming documentary about canine cancer created by the Canine Lymphoma Education Awareness and Research (CLEAR) Foundation [7]. The party serves as the final scene highlight Cardiff for the documentary and informs the pet-loving audience about the potential positive outcomes that can result from the integrative approach to cancer treatment.

Party Time

To generate donations for CLEAR [8], I requested that some of my celebrity clients contribute personal item of memorabilia to a fundraising raffle. Here are some of the great gifts we received:

Jane Lynch- signed copies of her best-selling autobiography Happy Accidents [9] and signed toy from her Disney animated-movie Wreck it Ralph

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley- signed modeling shot from her line of lingerie Rosie for Autograph [10]

Bryce Dallas-Howard- signed copy of her Academy Award-winning movie The Help [11]

Seth Gabel- signed copy of his paranormal FOX series Fringe [12]

Amanda Schull- signed copy of her classic dance-movie Center Stage [13]

There also were a variety of other items provided by:

Canine [14] and feline [15] foods and treats The Honest Kitchen

A ramp and magnetic dog door from PetSafe [16] (donated by dog trainer and Home and Family regular Laura Nativo)

A signed, limited-edition copy of the Rottweiler-centric story A Wish For Christmas [17]

A copy of the helpful The Dog Cancer Survival Guide [18] (donated by Functional Nutriments, makers of Apocaps [19], one of the nutraceuticals which continually helps in Cardiff’s post-chemotherapy treatment).

A mobile dog-grooming session Dirty Hairy [20]’s Judy Ray, one of Los Angeles’ finest groomers

A fancy toolkit and camping light personalized by Veterinary Cancer Group [21] (where I work and Cardiff underwent chemotherapy treatment overseen by Dr. Mary Davis).

We also had great gift bags for our party-goers, including:

Honest Kitchen’s Quickies [22] treats and Perfect Form [23] supplement

Functional Nutriment’s EverPup [24] supplement

The clever photo-book Life is Pawfect from the Pawtographer (AKA Robert Semrow of Pet World Insider [25])

Lucky Dog Cuisine’s amusing book Educating Humans (on life from a dog’s point of view) [26]

A frisbee from ACCESS Los Angeles [27] and lip balm from Veterinary Cancer Group

All canine and human attendees seemingly had a smashing time.  We dined on variety of whole-food snacks and even had a tasty, bone-shaped cake for the dogs (the humans got macaroons for desert).

Hopefully, there will be many birthdays in Cardiff’s future and the CLEAR message of hope for cancer patients will received by pet owners worldwide.
