Miley Cyrus’ Dog Gets No Vacation From Exposure To Second Hand Smoke

Photo of Miley Cyrus Cigarette Dog Star Magazine [1]Star Magazine [2] August 15, 2011 edition features a photo of Miley Cyrus with the double entendre of a caption “Smokin’ Hot” (P2).

Star reports “Miley Cyrus’ bikini body isn’t the only thing that’s smokin’!  With a ciggi in one hand and her adorable puppy in the other, she worker on her tan at Orchard Lake in Michigan with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth on July 31.”

I met Cyrus at a Los Angeles’ house party on New Year’s Eve in 2008.  At the time, I was impressed by the seeming good behavior she exhibited in abstaining from alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.  My perspective doesn’t necessarily mean that she didn’t partake in any substance consumption, as she spent repeated, prolonged sessions behind closed doors with her then underwear model boyfriend, Justin Gaston [3].

Star Magazine’s photo is the first I have seen of Miley smoking (although I would love for readers to send me hyperlinks or personal photos showing otherwise to celebritypetnews@gmail.com), so I now must express my disapproval for the negative message Cyrus’ “ciggie con dog” picture sends to pet owners.

Smoking around your pet is unacceptable.  Miley, would you do the same with a baby under your arm instead of your dog?  Being a responsible pet owner is just like being a human parent and should be undertaken with the same degree of planned parenthood.

Second hand smoke seriously affects the health of animals exposed to this toxic concoction of chemicals and tobacco.  Dogs use their mouths to groom themselves, so any substance adhering to the hair coat, skin, or paw pads can be orally ingested.

Not only is smoke irritating to the ocular and respiratory tract, but it can cause life threatening problems, including cancer.  A Colorado State University study [4] revealed a higher incidence of nasal and pulmonary (lung) tumors in dogs exposed to second hand smoke as compared to dogs living in a smoke free household.

Miley, for the sake of your animal and human family members, quit smoking!  If you cannot quit, then at least commit to smoking in a location well removed from your cute canine companion.

Do it for yourself…make it happen during National Dog Week, Miley!
Seriously, transfer smoke is also an issue. Many think just because they leave the home to smoke others are spared, but they aren’t. When they come back in and hug their kids or pets, they are inhaling transferred smoke inbedded in your clothing. Then when you sit in a chair or sofa shared by your animals…they are once again exposed…think about it!
